Russian cbank to issue plastic 100 rbl bank notes in Jan–Mar 2018

MAGNITOGORSK, Chelyabinsk Region, Feb 14 (PRIME) -- The Russian central bank plans to issue 100 ruble plastic banknotes dedicated to the FIFA 2018 in January–March 2018, First Deputy Chairman Grigory Luntovsky told reporters on Tuesday.

“The fact that the commemorative bank note dedicated to the football World Cup will be plastic is 100%... I hope that we will issue it in the first quarter of next year,” Luntovsky said.

He said that bank notes of one of the newly introduced denominations, 200 rubles or 2,000 rubles, can be issued in a plastic version in 2017.

Production of bank notes of combined materials is also being considered but experiments with materials can increase production costs. It is also unclear how these materials will behave in the Russian climate.

The design and security of the new money will be discussed in the central bank in April, Luntovsky said.

He said earlier that the central bank plans to switch to plastic money from paper in several ruble denominations, starting with 100 rubles.
